The novel satirizes the naiveté philosophical outlook by Gottfried Leibniz in which he states that “All is best in this, the best of all possible worlds” even after witnessing numerous horrors of the 18 th century. ![]() The book was signed under the pseudonym of Monsieur le docteur Ralph, which translates to Mister Doctor Ralph. An interesting fact about this novel was that Voltaire never truly openly admitted to writing Candide. This is the free audiobook edition of the novel. A young man, Candide, is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss.
